Court Report: Man sentenced to community correction for workplace theft

Published on

A man has been sentenced to a two-year community correction order for stealing and purchasing goods through his former employer, Prixcar Services, and selling them on his personal eBay account.

Patrick Kashani, 48, was charged twice for his thefts from 2016-2017 today at the County Court of Victoria. The first charge involved him privately selling 59 mobile and tablet devices both bought through the company and a part of company possessions, worth $116,256.

Kashani then sold approximately 320 scanning devices belonging to the company, worth $17,760.

Though he was unauthorised to deal with the items, the total value of goods did not put the employer or employees at financial risk.

Judge Canon said Kashani’s actions were “not motivated by personal greed”, but out of “personal need”.

She told the court he was not being paid adequately because his employer “denied paying staff award rates”, and he had worked there since 2000.

Kashani also experienced a “harsh childhood” where he was a victim of the Iranian revolution.

Judge Canon told the court his situation resulted in him experiencing “financial and personal stress”, particularly as a husband and father of two.

She said Kashani’s stress led him to drink excessively and gamble each week.

Along with Kashani’s community correction order, he will serve a 12-month good behaviour bond.
