Political Reporting: MP Warren Snowdon remains in his seat

Published on

Labor MP Warren Snowdon remains in his seat for Lingiari after last night’s election results, defeating Country Liberal Jacinta Price with a 5.1 percent swing in first preferences from 2016.

Labor received 55.42 percent of the total votes while the Country Liberal’s received 44.28 percent, creating a plus-2.77 percent swing for them compared to the last election.

The ABC election analytics found the Labor margin for Lingiari dropping slightly from 8.4 percent to 8.2 percent.

On May 21, Snowdon said on social media he was “honoured” to be re-elected again and representing for Lingiari is something he “doesn’t take lightly”.

“Being a good local member and listening to the people I represent have always been, and always will be my first priority,” he said.

On May 22 Price said on social media, Labor “always breaks the meter rules to get to people” and the system needs an “overhaul”.

Price said she documented the conduct of the Labor party in remote communities and found how her votes were “stolen undemocratically”.

“This has been a miscarriage of justice and to know votes from the bush were skewed so incredibly tells me there’s something desperately going on,” Ms Price said.

“What I find upsetting and concerning is the bush will continue to not have a voice as long as Snowdon continues on his seat,” she said.

Greens candidate for Lingiari, George Hanna who came third with 8.2 percent of first preference votes said with the Liberals/Nationals winning in Australia, Labor "can't act in the NT even if it wanted to on many issues".

Ms Price and Mr Snowdon did not respond to requests for comment before deadline.
