Reporting on Speeches: Leader of the Greens slams One Nation and Fraser Anning for their attitude towards Muslims

Published on

One Nation and Queensland Senator Fraser Anning are not welcome in parliament according to the Greens because of their attitude towards Muslims.

Speaking at the Christchurch vigil last night, Leader of the Greens, Richard Di Natale said, “enough is enough to the politics of hate and division”, in response to the Christchurch terrorist attack.

“The leader of a party who wears a burka into the Senate to mock a community of faith deserves nothing other than our contempt,” he said.

“To those politicians in Australia who say that settling Muslims was a mistake, you are wrong, you are wrong, you are wrong,” Mr Di Natale said.

The Christchurch terrorist attack killed a total of 50 Muslims from two mosques last Friday.

Anning said the Christchurch Attack was the fault of the immigration system allowing “Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place”.

Senior Lecturer in Australian Politics at Monash University, Dr Narelle Miragliotta, said Di Natale’s comment suggested some of the views expressed from One Nation and Anning were “generally divisive”.

Dr Miragliotta said Di Natale was, “not suggesting”, either One Nation or Fraser Anning should be prevented from participating in the electoral process.

“He was advocating for those ’divisive’ views to be sanctioned/condemned by parliament,” she said.

“Parliament has the authority to sanction MPs and Senators, and elected members are required to give thought to the likely effects of their words/statements on others,” she said.

One Nation’s parliamentary office responded with “no comment” to Di Natale. But said, “nine times out of 10, whatever Di Natale says is going to be anti One Nation, that’s how the Greens party operate, they don’t look for sensible solutions for Australia”.

The One Nation candidate for the Victorian Senate, James Hallam and Queensland Senator, Fraser Anning failed to respond to requests for comments before the deadline.
